Join our Board of Trustees!

Portobello Town Hall is looking to co-opt individuals with skills and experience to join our Board of voluntary Trustees as the organisation seeks to strengthen its position as Edinburgh’s seaside events venue.

Since opening its doors in 2023, Portobello Town Hall has successfully built a reputation of being a lively, accessible and flexible venue. Past and future bookings include music, comedy, circus, book launches, markets, dance, weddings, boxing, wrestling as well as Edinburgh’s Hogmanay, Imaginate – the International Children’s Festival and Gilded Balloon.  Now in its third year, the charity is looking for Trustees who can support this fast-growing organisation through the next stages of development. The current Board have completed a skills audit and are looking, in particular, for enthusiastic and committed individuals who have previous experience in, but not limited to, any of the following areas:

  • Fundraising and sponsorships (including the development and implementation of fundraising initiatives in order to strengthen the financial resilience of the venue).

  • Strategic planning (to contribute to the organisation’s vision, mission and values with a focus on long-term sustainability and the creation of a brand presence within the events/arts sectors)

  • Practical knowledge of building maintenance (especially heritage buildings, health and safety and futureproofing towards net zero)

  • HR/employment law

Expectation and commitment

We are looking for good communicators with the skills, experience and enthusiasm to engage with their role as Trustee as well as offer knowledge and understanding of the governance and operational management. Previous charity experience is not essential as training is available.

Full Board meetings are held in person every two months. There may also be additional smaller themed subgroup meetings as and when required.

How to apply If you would like to apply to join our Board, please submit a short statement telling us why you are interested in this role and the skills and experience you would be able to contribute.

The formal process for becoming a trustee is by election at the AGM which will be at the end of November, but our constitution also allows us to co-opt people in between times if they have specialist skills or expertise.

If you would like to chat with someone first to find out more, please drop a line to Beth at recruitment@portobellotownhall.org
